In addition to working in public, private, and commercial projects, over the past two years Augustina has worked on community art programs and murals in Chicago and rural India with disadvantaged children.

Artist Statement- Augustina Droze

I am a two dimensional artist who focuses primarily on mural painting. I find that the scale of a mural allows for increased expression and evokes a transitory response in viewers. Murals have the ability to relocate an onlooker and change one's perspective. I also feel that the accessibility of mural arts creates a large and robust viewing population which is often more diverse than that which frequents museums or galleries. Viewers are forced to face the art, make personal aesthetic and emotional judgments and move on.

When approaching a new project I listen closely to the views of my clients or sponsors, evaluate the space which it will be painted in, and draw on inner inspiration to execute the painting. Although each project varies in subject matter, I am always keenly focused on detail and quality. The mural should harmonize with the environment and tell the appropriate story. I am interested in natural and organic subject matter such as water, plants, and animals. Whenever possible I convey my messages through these natural elements. I like to use secondary colors and atmospheric techniques, and lots of reflections in my painting.

I am additionally currently turning my efforts towards using art to help impoverished communities. In projects here and in India I am helping to create and plan murals to increase literacy, fight homelessness and spread information about HIV prevention and treatment. Children and community members often work with me on these murals.
